Advent 2006
The Rev. John T. Farrell, Ph.D.

Left Behind

what would happen if

i were left behind by God?

what would it be like

to be forgotten and lost?

no, not by the God of love! (12/3/06)

Little Apocalypse

chaos, turbulence,

war, rumors of war, distress,

confusion, turmoil.

but wait, the world’s always

in flux…be alert always. (12/4/06)

Untitled

life is chaotic,

often nasty and brutish

or damn difficult.

is life a challenge or

a joy or a vale of tears? (12/5/06)

Advent #1

the season to wait,

a season of discernment,

a time of stillness,

a time to anticipate,

a time to seek holiness. (12/6/06)

Advent #2

it’s tough to preach,

to be true, thought-provoking,

creative always.

i must wait to hear God’s voice…

it’s my weekly advent. (12/7/06)

The face of evil as indifference

Advent Resolution #1

i ask forgiveness

for the sins of society.

forgive us all, Lord,

and guide me toward the work

of reconciliation. (12/8/06)

Waiting

to wait is to fail.

it means poor service, problems.

so who wants to wait?

but the work of God takes time…

to heal, to grow, to create. (12/9/06)

Advent Resolution #2

i spend most of my

days in a daze…half-asleep,

busy, overwhelmed.

God wants me awake, alert,

aware of divine presence. (12/10/06)

Isaiah 11:1

and in that day there

shall be a root of Jesse,

which shall stand for an

ensign of the people; and…

his rest shall be glorious. (12/11/06)

Our Lady of Guadalupe

i’m not even sure

she existed, but she lives

in so many hearts,

how can i deny her love

and empathy for the poor? (12/12/06)

The Quest

i seek to craft a

serious, sacred, sincere,

solemn life that will

give me deep peace, great joy,

and unreachable quietness. (12/13/06)

Vision

dreamer, romantic,

utopian, altruist,

reformer, crank, seer….

but yet, vision is the true

and sure path to holiness. (12/14/06)

A Prayer

i yearn for courage,

strength, patience to face trials.

oh God, be present.

strengthen me. surround me with

love. keep me safe. give me peace. (12/15/06)

Philippians 4: 4-5

rejoice in the Lord

always; again i will say,

rejoice and rejoice.

let your gentleness be known

to all. the Lord is near. (12/16/06)

Gaudete Sunday

this day we rejoice

for the Savior who is now

nigh and close at hand.

relax, light the pink candle,

wear the rose vestments, rejoice. (12/17/06)

Romans 8:24-25

now hope that is seen

is not hope. for who hopes for

what he sees? but if

we hope for what we don’t see,

we wait for it with patience. (12/18/06)

For All the Saints

who’s my patron,

my exemplar? there are six,

good and true: julian,

ignatius, francis, martin,

benedict, and mychael judge. (12/19/06)

A Prayer in Recovery

relieve me of the

bondage of self that i may

better do your will.

let the love we all need this

and all days begin with me. (12/20/06)

An Attitude of Gratitude

thankfulness must be

humankind’s common thread…

praise Allah daily,

thank Yahweh one hundred times, remember the ten lepers! (12/21/06)

Thankless Task

talent, treasure, time, and

tithe…three imperatives of

timely stewardship.

each year, i try, truly try,

to open hearts and wallets. (12/22/06)

The Edge

poets and priests live on

the edge of society;

the edge between the

spiritual and natural,

and on the edge of despair. (12/23/06)

Advent IV: Hail Mary, Full of Grace

ye who own the faith

of Jesus, sing the wonders

of the love of God

when he made the Virgin Mary

mother of his only Son. (12/24/06)

Christmas Eve

joyful noises of voice

trumpet, violin resound

as i bless the crèche…

with incense, votive candles

to provoke mystery, awe. (12/24/06)

Christmas

nativity, birth

genesis, embracement,

apotheosis,

epitome and quintessence,

encompassment, incarnation. (12/25/06)
